Letting the Curves Take You

December 18th 2007 11:13

Trying to maintain control in this life is a bit like trying to maintain control on a roller coaster. The ride has its own logic and is going to go its own way, regardless of how tightly you grip the bar. There is a thrill and a power in simply surrendering to the ride and fully feeling the ups and downs of it, letting the curves take you rather than fighting them. When you fight the ride, resisting what’s happening at every turn, your whole being becomes tense and anxiety is your close companion. When you go with the ride, accepting what you cannot control, freedom and joy will inevitably arise.

As with so many seemingly simple things in life, it is not always easy to let go, even of the things we know we can’t control. Most of us feel a great discomfort with the givens of this life, one of which is the fact that much of the time we have no control over what happens. Sometimes this awareness comes only when we have a stark encounter with this fact, and all our attempts to be in control are revealed to be unnecessary burdens. We can also cultivate this awareness in ourselves gently, by simply making surrender a daily practice. At the end of our meditation, we might bow, saying, “I surrender to this life.” This simple mantra can be repeated as necessary throughout the day, when we find ourselves metaphorically gripping the safety bar.

We can give in to our fear and anxiety, or we can surrender to this great mystery with courage. When we see people on a roller coaster, we see that there are those with their faces tight with fear and then there are those that smile broadly, with their hands in the air, carried through the ride on a wave of freedom and joy. This powerful image reminds us that often the only control we have is choosing how we are going to respond to the ride.

May you be able to express how you feel

May you feel at peace when you are standing still

May you know God as you concieve him to be

May you learn and remember the good times

May you learn from the bad

May you rest your heart quietly at night

May you know grace and serenity

May you know the graciousness of giving

May you live to see the love that is in life...

Grief and Belief..why here and now?

November 13th 2007 03:30
What the hell am I still doing here? Why do I put up with this? Why the...bloody hell…just why?? Questions always unanswered, never knowing where the next meeting will be …how come.

Look into the mirror! Lifting my tear streaked face to look into the blasted bathroom mirror. Looking in to the mirror – will it show my soul? Will it help cleanse the pain? What will the face of grief look like?

Bring On The Equalizer

October 11th 2006 04:33
For a long time, we've been told to basically wish our way to fulfillment with positive thoughts. We've been taught to "see" ourselves in wherever we want to fit in this world and it will be so. I really like that idea and I think it does work, but now I'm hearing that the "positive thinking=satisfaction and fulfilment" equation is missing an ingredient. Negativity.

Yep. That's the talk around the part of town I visited. (And, please forgive me for not remembering exactly where I visited. I forgot to bookmark the page.)

May I Have My Attention, Please?

October 10th 2006 03:45
It's a five-letter, two-syllable word and it's so quick to fly out of mind. Only a five-letter, two-syllable word that can make or break us, that can be the difference between a banner day and a knee-scraper. If you think the word I'm thinking is "focus", you're right.

Sometimes I wonder if we don't try so hard to stay so focused that we overload our brains and force them to vacate the premises. You've had the experience, I'm sure. It happened to me this morning. I was writing and about three sentences into a paragraph I had no idea what I was doing. During the few seconds It took for me to gather my thoughts again, I felt like I'd been suddenly put back into my body, but had no recollection of where I'd been.

It's Not Personal, I Do It For Me

October 2nd 2006 23:28
I've never heard anyone disagree with the wisdom don Miguel Ruiz lays out for us in The Four Agreements. Perhaps that's because no one can argue with the simple and forthright words that speak so eloquently to purity, love and promise

Agreement Two
