Living Spiritually - by upma

Gibran's Thoughts On 'Time'

I didn't start out to do continuous excerpts of The Prophet, but it looks like that's the way I'm leaning. Gibran's words are soothing. If there's a single thing this world needs, it's a soothing influence. I truly hope you enjoy these passages.

"You would measure time the measureless and the immeasurable. You would adjust your conduct and even direct the course of your spirit according to hours and seasons. Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing.

"Yet the timeless in you is aware of life's timelessness, and knows that yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream. And that that which sings and contemplates in you is still dwelling within the bounds of that first moment which scattered the stars into space. Who among you does not feel that his power to love is boundless? And yet who does not feel that very love, though boundless, encompassed within the centre of his being, and moving not from love thought to love thought, nor from love deeds to other love deeds? And is not time even as love is, undivided and spaceless?

"But if in your thought you must measure time into seasons, let each season encircle all the other seasons, and let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing."
~~ Kahlil Gibran

The Prophet On Joy & Sorrow

Again, I share with you the work of Kahlil Gibran. His words on Joy and Sorrow from The Prophet:

"Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.

"And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

"And how else can it be?

"The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.

"Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?

"And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

"When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.

"When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

"Some of you say, 'Joy is greater than sorrow,' and others say, 'Nay, sorrow is the greater.'

"But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

"Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

"Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.

"Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.

"When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall."
~~Kahlil Gibran

The Prophet ~~ Self-Knowledge

Today is one of those days when I know when to keep my two cents to myself and when its best to let the master speak.

In 1923, Kahlil Gibran published The Prophet. These are his thoughts about Self-Knowledge.

"Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights.
But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart's knowledge.
You would know in words that which you have always known in thought.
You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.

"And it is well you should.
The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea;
And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.
But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure;
And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.
For self is a sea boundless and measureless.

"Say not, 'I have found the truth,' but rather, 'I have found a truth.'
Say not, 'I have found the path of the soul.' Say rather, 'I have met the soul walking upon my path.'
For the soul walks upon all paths.
The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.
The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals."

They're Not Talking To Your Brother

In all of the articles, books, tapes, and whatever other medium we find our spiritual or philosophical wisdom, the word "you" comes up over and over. It probably gets used more often than any of the other pronouns you'll find in those materials. Maybe it's used so much because the author wants us to be quite sure who's being addressed. But who do you think about when you read "you"? No, it's not a silly question.

A few weeks ago, one of my friends was reading Norman Vincent Peale's "The Power Of Positive Thinking". When he was about halfway through the book, the two of us were talking about it and he said, "ya know, my brother really should be the one reading this". Evidently, he missed the "self" part of self-enlightenment.

You Asked For What You Got

One part of your psyche longs for serenity and peace. The images in your mind are neatly geared toward fulfillment, happiness, all that stuff. Then why is there still drama in your life?

If chaos is ruling and ruining your inner happiness, maybe you should take a little time to examine the motives hidden behind your motives. What you're getting might only be what you think you're asking for.

Side To Side Might Work

How many times do the opportunities of life seem to stop? There you are, merrily on your way, tra-la, and suddenly plunk!. Yep, that was life stopping dead in front of you and on your tracks, too! Now what?

You can't go forward and reverse doesn't work, either. You feel like you're in the movie. "Groundhog Day". Now what indeed!

Schedule This !!!

Most of us like to use the word 'schedule' every now and then during the day and sometimes we use it so often that it starts to sound like we doth protest too much.

With the possible exception of people who've been in the armed forces for a long time, most of us wander through life using home-made schedule templates and changing them to suit whatever pops up. I know I do.

WYSIWYG

The 'S' in WYSIWYG can be changed to 'sow' and boy, oh, boy do we ever have another meaning,

What I'm driving at is basically, if you plant a tomato seed, you're always gonna get a tomato plant. You might like to grow something else, but you can't because you started with a tomato seed. Simple, huh?

Do You Understand Me?

The frenetic pace of life as we know it is probably the worst culprit we have going against personal relationships. Actually, our heads are definitely not where they should be at all. If any of us listen to any other of us (which is seldom) the words behind the words are 'me first'. Recognize what I have done, listen to what I have to say. We sound like kids in a playground: "watch me, are you watching me?, watch me now".

Drawing Hands by M.C.Escher

There's a saying, "seek first to understand, then to be understood'. Good advice. If everyone wants to be the loudest, the biggest, the first, who will care and who will notice?
